The composite security/loss prevention practitioner with the highest annual income (salary plus cash bonuses and/or profit sharing) is a Security/Loss Prevention Director or Vice President located in New York City, Portland (OR), Houston, Nashville, Boston, Pittsburgh, or San Francisco/Oakland, or in New Jersey, Indiana, or Connecticut. This composite "individual" is employed by a manufacturing/extractive firm in the chemical/pharmaceutical/plastics/rubber, petroleum/coal/natural gas, or food/beverage/tobacco field, a communication firm, a security service, or a merchandising firm with 25,000 employees or more and an annual security budget of $10,000,000 or more. He or she has 25 or more years of experience and a graduate degree, and holds the CPP or CFE certificate, is involved with both DOD and DOE regulations, and reports to the Director of Administrative Services. A fair number of individuals in this group make well in excess of $250,000 per year, although Security/Loss Prevention Directors and Vice Presidents as a group have an average income of $67,617.

Far toward the other end of the income spectrum, Unarmed Security Officers/Guards have an average income of $17,154 per year. The lowest-paid employees in this group are located in San Juan, Nashville, Cincinnati, Detroit, New Orleans, or Memphis, or in West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, or Nebraska. This composite "individual" works for a nonprofit organization, security service, museum/art institute, or utility with under 1,000 employees and an annual security budget of under $100,000, in a position that requires little or no prior experience and less than a high school diploma. Such an individual may earn as little as $10,000 per year.

These composites represent the briefest possible "boil-down" of the voluminous data provided by 506 organizations regarding the current salary, salary ranges, and cash bonuses and profit- sharing, and numerous demographic variables for individuals in 30 benchmark jobs in the security/loss prevention field. These organizations took part in the ninth biennial pay survey of the security/loss prevention field, sponsored by the American Society for Industrial Security.
