Benefits in Nonprofit Organizations

Double-digit increases in employee and employer premiums are back according to data collected in the 2011 Benefits in Nonprofit Organizations Survey. After several years of single-digit growth, this dramatic jump in costs shows that efforts to control costs with cost shifting are not altogether successful. Cost shifting is still common, however, and can be felt by the employee in the form of increased annual deductibles that must be met before all or most services are payable by the plan, bigger out-of-pocket maximums, higher co-payments, lower annual maximums, and even less extensive coverage.

This Executive Summary presents selected findings based on this year's survey. Ninety-two (92) data submissions were received from participants in this survey, down from one hundred sixteen (116) participants in 2010. Data for one hundred forty-one (141) medical plans covering 14,711 employees were reported in the 2011 sample. Ninety (90) dental plans were reported.
