Income of Professional Engineers Can Exceed $200,000Compensation of Professional Engineers, 2000
As of January 1, 2000, the median total annual income of survey respondents was $75,500. This represents an increase of about 3.7% in the 12-month period since the preceding survey. During this same period, the Consumer Price Index rose by 2.7%. Individual incomes vary widely. 10% of respondents earn under $46,511, while 10% earn $136,900 or more. Median income shows a fairly consistent increase with increased engineering experience. The median income of respondents increases very regularly from $38,992 for those with under one year of experience to $93,100 for those with 30 years of experience or more.
Respondents holding doctoral degrees in engineering have a median income of $96,540. Those with the M.S. in engineering earn a median of $76,830. Finally, those with the B.S. in engineering earn $69,000. Income by engineering experience vs. level of education for three of the largest groups by degree held was investigated. Between 5 - 9 years of experience (below which there are insufficient data for doctoral degrees for realistic analysis) and 30 or more years of experience, the "spreads" of median income for the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in engineering are 64.8%, 57.5%, and 74.2%, respectively. Survey participants fall primarily into the higher professional grades. Income rises from a median of $40,020 for Engineer I/II (entry levels) to $125,000 for Engineer IX (the highest level). The highest median income by major branch of engineering goes to those respondents working in petroleum engineering ($110,000). This group is followed by those in mining ($98,471), nuclear ($97,110), and chemical engineering ($82,444). At the other end of the income spectrum are those employed in aeronautical & aerospace ($71,428), agricultural ($70,245), and geotechnical engineering ($70,000). Median annual income is highest for respondents in executive/administrative job functions ($96,810). This group is followed by those in sales/marketing ($80,160) and R&D ($78,125). The lowest median income is received by those in design ($54,099), preceded by those in project study & analysis ($66,350), and project management/engineering ($71,000). The highest median incomes of the 30 industry groups studied were received by respondents employed by producers of food/beverage/tobacco ($91,750), petroleum/natural gas ($90,430), chemical/pharmaceutical ($86,350), and coal products ($84,750), and colleges & universities and research organizations/laboratories (both $85,000). Those receiving the lowest median incomes are employed by state & local governments ($62,900 & $66,350 respectively), civil/structural and mechanical engineering firms ($65,000 & $70,000 respectively), and producers of transportation equipment ($68,000) and fabricated metal products ($69,749). By registration-certification status, those respondents who are P.E.s certified in Forensic Engineering enjoy the highest median annual income ($90,350). Following them are P.E.s who are certified in Environmental Engineering ($83,500). Unregistered-uncertified engineers have a median income of $57,000. Engineers-in-Training/Engineer Interns have the lowest median income ($46,200). Engineers in non-supervisory positions have a median income of $61,000, while the median income of those supervising/managing only engineers, scientists and/or technologists increases regularly from $63,174 for those who supervise one or two such professionals to $119,920 for those who direct the activities of 50-plus professionals. Supervision of both professionals and non-professionals results in a median income of $66,000 with three or four such subordinates; income increases regularly to $134,600 for the group that manages 250 or more such subordinates. The highest median incomes are in the northeastern states ($80,300) and the southwestern states ($76,000); the lowest in the north central states ($68,640) and the Great Lakes states ($71,490). The income data received were also analyzed by metropolitan area. The highest median income is found in San Francisco/Oakland, CA ($100,948) and Nassau/Suffolk Counties, NY ($94,920), followed by San Jose, CA ($90,500); Newark/Jersey City, NJ ($89,440); and Houston, TX ($87,000). The lowest median incomes found in this study of 66 metropolitan areas are in Providence, RI ($62,500), Sacramento, CA ($62,645), and Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Newport News/Chesapeake/Hampton/Portsmouth, VA ($62,712).
